Fire of Spring
...so you're after the road to Samarkand
Drabble: Abide (Alias; Sark)

It all started with [info]sarkastic's idea.

ETA: The 'verse is continued in 'Creatura' and 'Glance Off Paradise'.

Sark as a fallen angel. No, for real. PG. As above, so below. (Vague Sark/Sydney.)

I see, I seek;
I'm near.
Be true,
Skin.

- Theodore Roethke, 'O, Thou Opening, O'

Abide

A son hated his father so much he hacked his own wings at the joints. Clawing at quill and cartilage alchemised to a brilliant pearl white -- the only colour allowed in heaven. Declared emancipation.

Rebel with a gun, ever since. He'll not follow his brothers' well-trodden path.

     Did that happened?
     (It's the truth serum talking.)

This son -- not the mightiest, or the most favoured -- chooses to be an atheist. That's quite a pretzel of logic. You have to admire the mental obstinacy.

A connoisseur of the profane, he savours vintage wines, picturing worms in the orchard and offal on the ground.

     Bullshit.
     (Give it time, Sydney.)
     He's fucking with us.

This son says to Eve, Take me, make me your instrument. I'm yours.

He is. That is, until he isn't. As above, so below; he has no sovereign, no master.

But when a mouthful of broken teeth is immanent he had better pretend to believe in things like consequences -- like fear. Lie down like lions. Bite the bullet; face the music. He likes such graphic turns of phrase.

Now you listen to me, you sonovabitch.

His eyes, lighthouses searching for fellow castaways with ironic laughter, are iceberg blue.

This son looks at this daughter.

Ooooh, Alias fic! And such an intriguing premise! This gave me shivers and has a very much like a fairytale and I love that quality. Just, yes. *loves*

Thank you! I'm very glad it worked for you.

aadjzgkhdfgahdlahj could not have come back to a better fic after The Vintner's Luck. I want to quote every other sentence at you because of how much of a chord it strikes. But if I had to choose just the one?

A connoisseur of the profane, he savours vintage wines, picturing worms in the orchard and offal on the ground.

For obvious reasons.

You're absolutely right. Xas is such a remarkable creation, such an unusual literary rendering of an angel, I think I'll always have him in the back of my mind when I write fallen angels.

Thanks for the feedback. :)

If this is what I get from my cracked out ideas, I'll have to come up with more of them.

I love it. The imagery is beautiful and it's so completely Sark. It would actually make sense on this show if he were a fallen angel. :)

As soon as you said it, I knew I had to write it. :) And of course, it wouldn't be Alias without daddy issues - for both Sark and for Sydney. So the AU actually fits.

LOVE. I demand more fallen!Sark.

I'd love to come back to him later, when I've had some more time to think about it. Thank you for the feedback!

This is very cool -- intriguing and lovely.

Thank you so much. :)

*glee*

Of *course* Sark is a fallen angel, it makes perfect sense.

Lovely and poetic.

I'm so relieved the format and concept of piece seems to be working. Of course, it helps the imagination when our boy looks like that. *points to your icon*

Thank you so much.

That last line...I could read that line forever.

His eyes, lighthouses searching for fellow castaways with ironic laughter, are iceberg blue.
Is it strange that as I read this, I could feel Sark's eyes moving with me? It was amazing.

You made me remember what it was like to write Sarkney. There was always this hint of poetry in between the lines.

Thanks for sharing!

That line (and the eleventh hour attempt to tie him into a parallel with Sydney) was me becoming aware that Sark without that hint of yearning for something just out of range of possibility wouldn't really be Sark, even if he is a fallen angel.

Thanks for the feedback!

Oh WOW!! I really want to quote the whole darn thing. And I agree: More FallenAngel!Sark. :D

My favorite part, though, was this line:

This son -- not the mightiest, or the most favoured -- chooses to be an atheist. That's quite an pretzel of logic. You have to admire the mental obstinacy.
- I love it for the wry observation.

What a beautiful and lyrical piece of work. THANK YOU!

Fallen!Sark was an idea I couldn't let go of once [info]sarkastic mentioned it. I knew I had to find a way to make it work. I'm so glad you enjoyed it. :)

Oh, this is just lovely. The style is perfect, and the concept makes far too much sense. I love what you did with this.
8th-Apr-2008 02:13 am (UTC)
I'm glad you thought it made sense - it wasn't making a lot of sense on Semagic when I was working it out. ;) I think I just wanted to make him a different kind of rebel angel to the tragic, Miltonian types. He's kind of brattish, and puckish, instead. He likes being on Earth. More like Crowley than Lucifer.

YES! Crowley-ish, exactly. *g* (I may have an inordinate amount of love for Crowley, sorry. ;)) It really worked for me that way. I agree that type fits his character far better, imo.

You totally own Sark in so many ways; oh so beautiful. I love this!
8th-Apr-2008 02:15 am (UTC)
Thank you!!

Coming back to Sark feels so awesome. He's like Adam - endlessly flexible. I feel like I know him inside and out.

So I've been reminescing this weekend and reading old Alias fic...well this one's not old but I must have missed it when you posted. But it's lovely and very intriguing. It just fits Sark so well.

Thank you! I'm glad you liked it.
